<!-- about this layout -->
Typing Japanese with romaji
Most Japanese people type in romaji: they spell the sound in Latin letters and the computer turns it into kana. This page does the same, using the spellings Japanese input methods accept, so both shi and si give し, and both tsu and tu give つ.
Double a consonant for a small っ (kitte → きって). Type n before a consonant, or nn, for ん (kanji → かんじ). Combine with y for small ゃ ゅ ょ (kyo → きょ, sha → しゃ). The hyphen types the long-vowel mark ー. This page does not convert to kanji — that needs a dictionary-based input method.

<!-- questions -->
Common questions
How do I type Japanese without a Japanese keyboard?
Use this page: type the sounds in Latin letters (romaji) on your normal keyboard and they turn into hiragana or katakana as you type. Or tap the kana chart. Then press Copy and paste the text anywhere. Nothing to install.
How do I add the Japanese keyboard on Windows, Mac or iPhone?
Windows 11: Settings → Time & language → Language & region → Add a language, choose Japanese (Windows adds the Microsoft IME; press Alt + ` or the 半角/全角 key to switch between romaji and kana input). Switch keyboards with Windows key + Space. Mac: System Settings → Keyboard → Text Input → Edit → + and pick Japanese – Romaji (under Japanese). Switch with Control + Space or the Globe key. iPhone: Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Add New Keyboard → Japanese, then Romaji (or Kana for the flick keyboard). Switch with the globe key. Android (Gboard): Gboard settings → Languages → Add keyboard → Japanese (日本語), then the QWERTY or 12-key layout.
How do I type ん, small っ and long vowels?
For ん type nn, or n followed by a consonant (konban → こんばん). For a small っ, double the next consonant: kitte → きって, matcha → まっちゃ. For the katakana long-vowel mark ー, type a hyphen: ko-hi- → コーヒー.
Why does konnichiwa give こんにちは, not こんにちわ?
In the greetings こんにちは and こんばんは the last sound is the particle は, which is pronounced "wa" but written with は. This page fixes those two greetings for you. Everywhere else, type ha for は and wa for わ.
Can I type kanji here?
No. Turning kana into kanji needs a dictionary and a list of candidates to choose from, which is what the Japanese input methods on Windows, Mac and phones do. Use this page for hiragana and katakana, or add the Japanese keyboard to your device for kanji.
