Typing Test in Other Languages

Check your typing speed in Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian or Ukrainian. Each test uses real everyday text with the language’s accents and special letters, and gives you WPM and accuracy.

What WPM and accuracy mean

WPM, words per minute, is correct characters divided by five, per minute: the five-character word is the standard that makes languages comparable. Accuracy is the share of keys you got right as you pressed them. Fast with low accuracy means you spend time fixing mistakes; slow down until accuracy is above about 95%, then build speed.

Common questions

What does WPM mean in a typing test?

Words per minute. Typing tests count a "word" as five characters, spaces included, so results are comparable between languages with long and short words. These tests count only correct characters, so mistakes lower your WPM.

What is the difference between WPM, raw WPM and accuracy?

WPM counts correct characters only. Raw WPM counts everything you typed, right or wrong. Accuracy is the share of keystrokes that were right when you pressed them, so a mistake you fixed with backspace still counts against it.

Why am I slower in another language?

Unfamiliar words, different letter patterns and accent keys all slow you down, and on a layout you rarely use you also have to look for keys. Most people type noticeably slower in a second language. Practise with the same language for a while and compare with your own earlier scores.

Can I take the test without a keyboard for that language?

Yes. Turn off "Count missing accents as errors" and plain letters are accepted for accented ones (e for é, u for ü). You can also tap special letters under the test. Russian and Ukrainian need Cyrillic, so add the layout in your system settings or use the on-screen keyboards linked from those tests.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Tap the text to open your keyboard; the timer and score stay at the top and the text scrolls line by line so it stays above the keyboard. Phone keyboards make autocorrect choices, so turn off autocorrect for the most accurate result.
