Frequently Asked Questions
Is OmniTalk free?
OmniTalk is free to download, and BASIC mode — on-device translation with downloaded languages — is free to use. PRO mode, which uses a premium cloud speech engine for the highest recognition accuracy, is available as a subscription. You can see current pricing inside the app.
What's the difference between BASIC and PRO mode?
BASIC mode uses Apple's on-device speech recognition and translation — free, private, and it works offline once you download a language pair. PRO mode uses a premium cloud speech engine that delivers noticeably better accuracy in noisy environments, with fast talkers, and when speakers mix languages. You can switch between modes at any time.
How do I download a language for offline use?
Open the language picker and tap the download icon next to a language, or simply select a language that isn't downloaded yet — iOS will offer to download it. You're also offered the download for your two main languages during onboarding. Once downloaded, translation for that pair runs entirely on your device.
Why does the app say "Online" instead of "On-device"?
That badge means the current language pair isn't downloaded to your device yet, so OmniTalk is translating through the cloud. Tap the badge to download the language — after that, translation runs on-device: free, offline, and word-by-word fast.
Does OmniTalk work without internet?
Yes — for any language pair you've downloaded, both speech recognition and translation run on your device with no connection at all. If a language isn't downloaded and you're offline, OmniTalk will still transcribe your speech and will tell you honestly that translation needs a one-time download.
How does face-to-face (180°) mode work?
In the conversation view, switch to the 180° layout and place the phone between you and the other person. Their half of the screen is flipped toward them, so both of you read your own language right side up while the conversation is translated live in both directions.
Which languages are supported?
OmniTalk supports 60+ languages including English, Spanish, French, German, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hindi, Russian, Portuguese, Italian, Turkish, and many more. On-device offline translation availability depends on Apple's translation models; every language works via online translation.
Is my conversation private?
With downloaded languages, everything happens on your device — nothing is sent anywhere. When cloud services are used (undownloaded languages or PRO mode), audio or text is transmitted over an encrypted connection solely to perform the translation. Your conversation history is stored locally on your device and never uploaded.
Do I need to create an account?
No. OmniTalk works fully without an account — no sign-up, no email. Your settings, downloaded languages, and history all live on your device.
Can I start OmniTalk with Siri or the Action button?
Yes. OmniTalk supports Siri Shortcuts, so you can say something like "Start translating" or assign OmniTalk to the iPhone Action button to jump straight into a listening session.
What devices does OmniTalk support?
OmniTalk is available on iPhone and requires a recent version of iOS. On-device translation and speech recognition use Apple's built-in models, so newer devices download and run them fastest.
How do I manage or cancel my PRO subscription?
Subscriptions are handled by the App Store. Go to Settings → your name → Subscriptions on your iPhone, select OmniTalk, and manage or cancel from there. Cancelling keeps PRO active until the end of the paid period.
Troubleshooting
The mic button doesn't start listening
Make sure OmniTalk has microphone and speech recognition permissions: go to iPhone Settings → OmniTalk and enable Microphone and Speech Recognition. Then return to the app and tap the mic again.
Translation isn't appearing, only my transcribed words
This usually means the language pair isn't downloaded and there's no internet connection. Connect to the internet once and download the language (tap the status badge or the download icon in the language picker) — after that it works offline.
A language download seems stuck
Language downloads are handled by iOS in the background and there's no progress bar, so they can take a few minutes on slow connections. Stay on Wi-Fi, keep some free storage available, and check the language picker again shortly. Translation keeps working online in the meantime.
Speech recognition is inaccurate in noisy places
Hold the phone closer to whoever is speaking and try to reduce background noise. For the best accuracy in difficult conditions — noise, fast speech, mixed languages — switch to PRO mode, which uses a premium cloud speech engine.
Camera translation isn't recognizing text
Ensure OmniTalk has camera permission (iPhone Settings → OmniTalk → Camera). Hold the phone steady, make sure the text is well lit and in focus, and avoid extreme angles. Stylized or handwritten fonts are harder to recognize.
Spoken translations have no sound
Check that your ringer/silent switch is off silent mode and the volume is up. If you're using Bluetooth headphones, confirm they're connected to your phone and not another device.
PRO mode says it can't connect
PRO mode requires an internet connection. Check that you're online and try again. If you're on a restricted network (hotel or corporate Wi-Fi with a captive portal), open the browser to complete the network sign-in first.
The app is crashing or freezing
Force-close the app and reopen it. Make sure you're running the latest version from the App Store and a recent version of iOS. If the issue persists, restart your iPhone — and if it still happens, email us with your device model and iOS version.
How do I delete my conversation history?
Conversation history is stored only on your device. You can delete individual conversations from the History tab, or remove everything by deleting the app. Nothing is stored in the cloud.
How do I restore my PRO purchase on a new phone?
Install OmniTalk, then use Restore Purchases in the app's settings while signed into the same Apple ID you used to subscribe. Your PRO access will be restored automatically.
