A phrase card you point at

A conversation card works when speaking does not: a loud taxi, a pharmacy counter, a waiter who is in a hurry. You find the line you mean in your own language and point at the translation next to it. The other person reads it in theirs.

Common questions

Which languages can I put on a card?

Any two of 32: English plus every language in the OmniTalk phrasebooks, including Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Arabic, Hindi, Thai and Hebrew. Every pair works, not just pairs with English, so a Spanish speaker can make a card for Japanese.

What is the small line under each phrase?

A plain-English respelling of how to say it, with the stressed syllable in capitals. It is written for English readers, so it is most useful when English is one of your languages. Turn it off with "Show how to say it" if the card is only for pointing.

How do I print it on one page?

Choose two or three situations instead of all six, then press Print card. Everything except the card is hidden when you print, and it comes out black on white so it works on any printer.

Can I link to a specific card?

Yes. The page address updates as you choose, for example /tools/conversation-cards?from=english&to=japanese&topics=food,directions opens the English-to-Japanese food and directions card. Copy it from the address bar.

Are the translations checked?

The phrases are the standard, polite forms a traveller needs, written as a local would write them. They come from the same data as our printable phrasebooks. Some languages have not yet had a native-speaker review, and the phrasebook page for each language says which.

When the card runs out, talk

A card covers the questions you can predict. OmniTalk translates the rest of the conversation out loud, in real time, in 60+ languages, and works offline for the moments you have no signal.
