<!-- about this layout -->
The Greek layout
This is the standard Greek layout used on Windows, Mac and phones. Most letters sit on the Latin key that sounds or looks like them: A → α, B → β, D → δ, F → φ. The odd ones out: Q types ; (the Greek question mark), W types ς, U types θ, J types ξ, C types ψ, V types ω.
The ; key is a dead key: it types nothing by itself and puts the stress accent (tonos) on the next vowel. Shift + ; gives the diaeresis (ϊ, ϋ), and Shift + W gives both (ΐ, ΰ). To type the accent on its own, press it and then Space.

<!-- questions -->
Common questions
How do I type Greek without a Greek keyboard?
Use this page. Tap the on-screen keys, or type on your normal keyboard: each key types the Greek letter in the same position on a Greek keyboard, so you do not need to install anything. Then press Copy and paste the text anywhere.
How do I add the Greek keyboard on Windows, Mac or iPhone?
Windows 11: Settings → Time & language → Language & region → Add a language, choose Greek. Switch keyboards with Windows key + Space. Mac: System Settings → Keyboard → Text Input → Edit → + and pick Greek (choose "Greek Polytonic" only for ancient Greek). Switch with Control + Space or the Globe key. iPhone: Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Add New Keyboard → Greek. Switch with the globe key. Android (Gboard): Gboard settings → Languages → Add keyboard → Greek (Ελληνικά).
How do I type Greek accents?
Press the accent key first, then the vowel. On a Greek keyboard the accent (tonos) is on the ; key, so ; then α gives ά, and ; then Ω gives Ώ. Shift + ; then ι gives ϊ. On a phone, long-press the vowel instead.
When do I use ς instead of σ?
Use ς only as the last letter of a word and σ everywhere else: σοφός, ήλιος. Capital sigma is always Σ. On the Greek layout ς has its own key, W.
