Speaker Cleaner: Water Eject Sound

Press Start to play a 165 Hz tone for 30 seconds. With the volume all the way up and the speaker facing down, the vibration pushes water and loose dust out of the grille. Works on iPhone, Android and laptops — no app needed.

Take out earbuds and headphones first. This tone plays at full volume through the speaker you want to clean. Never play it into your ears.

Press Start. The tone runs for 30 seconds.

  1. 1. Volume all the way up. Use the side buttons. On iPhone, also turn off Silent mode if you hear nothing.
  2. 2. Speaker facing down. Lay the phone so its speaker points at the floor and the water can drip out.
  3. 3. Run it 2–3 times. Wipe the grille between runs. Try Dust mode for a crackly speaker.

<!-- how it works -->

Sound moves the water, gravity does the rest

A low, loud tone makes the speaker cone push air back and forth through the grille. Droplets caught in the mesh get shaken loose and fall out if the speaker faces down. It helps with water and loose dust. It is not a repair: if the speaker is damaged, a tone will not fix it.

Common questions

Does a water eject sound actually work?

It can help. A low tone at full volume makes the speaker cone move a lot, and that movement pushes droplets out of the speaker grille. It works best soon after the phone got wet, with the speaker facing down. It cannot fix a speaker that is damaged, and it does not dry water that got inside the phone.

Why 165 Hz?

A low frequency makes the speaker move much further on each cycle than a high one, so it shifts more water. 165 Hz is low enough to do that and still within what small phone speakers can play. It is similar to the way Apple Watch’s Water Lock uses sound to push water out of the watch speaker.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. It runs in any modern browser — Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Edge — on iPhone, Android, tablets and laptops. On iPhone, turn off Silent mode if you hear nothing, and turn the volume all the way up with the side buttons.

Can I use it to clean AirPods or other earbuds?

Do not play this tone into earbuds or headphones while they are in your ears — at full volume it is unpleasant and can hurt your hearing. If your AirPods or earbuds got wet, dry them the way the maker recommends and let them dry fully before charging.

My speaker still sounds muffled. What now?

Run the tone two or three times, gently wipe the grille, and then let the phone dry in open air for a few hours. If it still sounds muffled or crackly the next day, the speaker may be damaged and needs a repair shop or the maker’s support.
