Classroom Noise Meter
A traffic light that turns amber, then red, when your class gets too loud. Press Start, set the quiet level, pick a limit and go full screen on the projector or an iPad. It uses the microphone but records nothing.
Nothing is recorded. The meter only measures how loud the room is, moment to moment, inside this browser tab. No audio is saved, stored or sent anywhere.

Press while the room is quiet. It listens for 2 seconds and treats that as the calm baseline, so the meter suits your mic and room.
<!-- how teachers use it -->
A visual cue the whole room can see
Students respond to a light faster than to a reminder. The meter follows the average loudness over the last second or so, not every bang and scrape, so it reacts to the room getting louder rather than to a single noise.

<!-- questions -->
Common questions
Does the noise meter record my class?
No. The page reads the microphone level many times a second, uses it to set the light, and throws it away. No audio is saved, stored or uploaded, and nothing leaves the browser tab. Closing the tab or pressing Stop turns the microphone off.
How do I set the right noise level for my classroom?
Start the meter while the class is working quietly and press “Set quiet level now”. Then move the limit slider until normal group work stays green or amber and shouting turns it red. Lower the limit for silent reading, raise it for group work.
Can I show it on a projector or interactive whiteboard?
Yes. Open the page on the computer connected to the projector, press Start, then Full screen. The traffic light grows to fill the screen. On a laptop, the built-in microphone works; a mic near the middle of the room gives a fairer reading.
Does it work on an iPad?
Yes, in Safari or Chrome. Allow the microphone when asked, prop the iPad on a desk facing the class, and press Full screen. The page also asks the iPad to keep the screen awake while the meter runs, where the browser allows it.
Is the reading in decibels?
No. It is a relative scale from 0 to 100, tuned to your microphone by the quiet-level button. A browser cannot know how sensitive a microphone is, so it cannot give real decibel readings — but for “is the room getting too loud?” a relative scale is what you need.
