Four things that fix
most of the accent

Г is an H, not a G

Ukrainian г is a soft, voiced H: Говоріть is ho-vo-REET, and англійською is ahn-HLEEY-sko-yoo. The rare hard G has its own letter, ґ.

Four letters Russian does not have

і is "ee", ї is "yee", є is "yeh" and ґ is a hard G. And и, which looks like the Russian "ee", is a short "ih" in Ukrainian — written "y" in the respellings below.

Vowels keep their sound

Unlike Russian, an unstressed о stays an "o". Дорого is DO-ro-ho, every o the same. That makes Ukrainian easier to read aloud than it looks.

Open in Ukrainian

Many people in Ukraine also understand Russian, but Ukrainian is the respectful default. Добрий день and Дякую on their own go a long way.
